MP campaigns against bogus clothing collections

Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch raised a motion against bogus clothing collections in the Houses of Parliament and said the authorities were too lax when it came to cracking down on what has become nationwide organised crime, depriving charities of much needed donations. Ms Crouch said the public was often confused about whether a company making clothing collections on behalf of a charity were genuine. The MP said that flyers and leaflets distributed by bogus collectors often looked authentic.

The Textile Recycling Association, the UK's trade association for collectors, graders and exporters of used clothing described the outcome of a recent with Nick Hurd (Minister for Civil Society) and other key stakeholders from the police, trading standards, local authority, business and charity sector, as one of the most promising from a Governmental meeting in years. The roundtable meeting was called by the Minister during a Parliamentary debate in October after Tracey Crouch MP tabled a motion condemning the activities of Bogus Charity Collectors.

Judges award the International Trade Award to businesses who can clearly demonstrate their commitment to the growth of trade abroad showing how they deal with cultural and language constraints.

Praising the company on its charity kerbside collection scheme NBCS recycling co-ordinator Karen Burt said, "Collections are made by long-established recycling firm i + g cohen. We do nothing for this money which, last month, topped £35,000 - that's 700 tonnes. It's a major source of income for us with no expenses at all."
